Douglas Whyte

South African born jockey and 13 time Hong Kong champion jockey Douglas Whyte is retiring from the saddle with the 47 year old set to take up training in Hong Kong, with the licensing committee granting him a license to commence his career switch for the 2019-2020 season.

Whyte who won those 13 jockey titles consecutively from 2000-2001 until current champion and Australian Zac Purton ended his reign in 2013-2014, has won over 1600 races in Hong Kong and will be looking to follow the path of another successful ex-hoop - come trainer in Tony Cruz who as a rider was Hong Kong's champion jockey six times before first tasting title success in 2000 as a trainer.

Whyte currently sits at 6th place for this season's Hong Kong Jockey Premiership with 22 winners so far.
