Opinion: With the AFL Grand Final gone, what is racing doing to promote the Spring Racing Carnival around its stars and amid pressing issues?
It’s the day after the AFL Grand Final delivered a win everyone craved (except Sydney Swans fans). Much like Michelle Payne (who was there) winning a Melbourne Cup for a trainer from Berriwillock. Just like the Bulldogs, they were proof that anything is possible.
And so at Flemington, on a rare Sunday for Turnbull Stakes days, and there is much glad handing from the sports main players and administrators saying this is now time for racing to take over as the biggest show in town with it’s spring carnival.
And now with Hartnell trotting up with disdain in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes, the stage is set for a racing grand final of huge proportions at Moonee Valley against our biggest star Winx in the G1 William Hill Cox Plate.
You’d just have to hope trainer John O’Shea drops his poker face and plays along with the game for racing’s sake, something his boss Sheik Mohammed would appreciate.
Let’s get the talk going – Winx v Hartnell! Horse v Horse! Star v Star! Come along for the greatest show in spring.
