THE G1X.COM.AU Perth Cup belonged to Delicacy, the $2.25 favourite who carried a record 59kg to victory, but there were more winners at Ascot than just Peter Hall and six-time winner Bob Peters. Take the last on the card, the 1100-metre Ascend Sales Trophies event.
In an open-betting affair, Volkoff – trained by Gary Crispin and ridden by Jason Whiting – started a $5.50 favourite and duly saluted for his happy owners, Peter and Ron Whyte. It capped off a memorable G1X.com.au Perth Cup day, where a crowd of over 18,000 flocked to Ascot. It was the fifth win from 11 starts for the promising four-year-old mare Volkoff, who is by Time Thief and out of Stormarama.
Volkoff is homebred with the dam also owned by the Whytes, making the win all the more special. Volkoff won half a length from Heavy Set ($13) and Ripper Red ($17). And wasn’t it a great thrill? “Absolutely,” Paul Whyte said. “This is the day we wanted her to race.”
