It’s one of the most beautiful images you will ever see. And the story behind it is even more amazing.
The touching photo is of Zindita, a Dutch mare, who was mourning the loss of her own stillborn, nestled up to a foal that had lost its mother, and was taken just an hour after the two were introduced.
Dr. Patrick Brogan, an Australian who moved to the Netherlands in 2012 and has since started Equiception - a company that specialises in veterinary supervision of reproduction in horses - spoke to G1X.com.au to tell this sad tale that has a happy ending.
“Zindita had her foal two weeks early. Unfortunately, it was dead when I delivered it. It was upside down and folded in half,” Brogan said. “A colleague of mine had another mare foal early. The mare ruptured her uterus and died, so we put the two together.”
Brogan described Zindita as a “lovely horse” that was terribly sad after the traumatic experience.
