The racing life of a colt is to win some black type races that makes him valuable as a Stallion (if he is fortunate enough to keep his crown jewels). For those that go onto life as a Stud while they may not be racing on the track, they are racing up the rankings to be the best stud in the land and to have the most valuable yearlings go through the various sales around the country.
On Tuesday, December 5 2017, Racing Victoria in conjunction with Thoroughbred Breeders Victoria announced a new race to be introduced in 2019 - The Showdown.

To promote the strength of the Victorian Breeding Industry. The VOBIS Sires is an Owner and Breeder incentive aimed at promoting Victorian based stallions, also providing investors with lucrative incentives for purchasing eligible progeny.
So how was it determined the race would be called The Showdown?
Showdown was a champion stallion who called Stockwell Stud home after his racing career. Standing between 1966 and 1983 in which he sired 46 Stakes winners (13 at Group 1) including Golden Slippers, Blue Diamonds, Oaks and Derby Winners).
In 1985, Showdown passed away and has been laid to rest at Stockwell Stud. As he was well known for producing quality 2 year olds and the race is for 2 year old's it was a fitting way to remember a champio...
