Australian jockey Glen Boss won the $500,000 SGD ($475,000 AUD) Patron’s Bowl (1600m) for a second time at Kranji on Sunday, the three-time Melbourne Cup-winning hoop riding Alibi to victory in the Singapore Group 1.
A member of the Australian Racing Hall of Fame, Boss, 47, took out the race last year aboard Well Done for David Kok.
The 2017 renewal of the Patron’s Bowl - the second leg of the Singapore Four-Year-Old Challenge - was a thriller, with Alibi having to survive a late challenge from Elite Excalibur, who was ridden by Boss’ countryman Vlad Duric.
Wide apart, Alibi (by Darci Brahma) and Elite Excalibur (by Fastnet Rock) settled down to find out the finish. Interestingly, both riders believed they had won as they crossed the line.
The judge took a few moments before finding a narrow margin in favour of the Michael Clements-trained entire ($5 with TAB.com.au). Infantry (by Tavistock) was third, while Lim’s Cruiser (by Casino Prince), who was ridden by another Aussie Danny Beasley, finished fourth.
