Trainer John Thompson says Maurus is “one hundred per cent,” as the horse strives to claim his first Group 1, in the Doomben Cup on Sunday.
“Second-up over the 1800m in the Hollindale he didn’t have the fitness, but he’s third-up now and one hundred per cent,” Thompson told G1X.com.au.
For a horse that ‘didn’t have the fitness’ in The Hollindale, he still rattled home late to finish third.
The performance caught the eye of the punters, but what did Thompson make of the run?
“I reckon he was the only horse all day to make ground from the back, right around them and down from the outside,” he said.
“I thought it was impossible to beat the first two horses, they’re both Group 1 winners… and they got it quite easy up front, so it was hard to run them down.”
One of those ‘first two horses’ was eventual winner It’s Somewhat. He’s dictated terms in his past two outings, but does Thompson expect he’ll get his own way again?
