Hartnell heads the Caulfield Cup weights this year with 58kg

A new change in the handicapping policy will now see the Caulfield Cup winner not receiving a penalty for the Melbourne Cup should it already be allotted 56kg or more.

In what's sure to re-establish what was once a strong link between the two famous races, Racing Victoria's chief handicapper Greg Carpenter said the change had been reached in consultation with the Victoria Racing Club which hosts the Melbourne Cup and the Melbourne Racing Club which hosts the Caulfield Cup.
 
It's a move that's likely to strengthen the interest around the Caulfield Cup considerably with Viewed the only Melbourne Cup winner in the last 10 years to have ran in years Caulfield Cup compared to seven in the decade before.
