Heavyweight jockey Jamie Mott has notched 100 wins in a season for the first time since 2007/08.
The 29-year-old, who rides on the flat and over jumps, brought up the milestone aboard Phoenix Park in the final race at Sandown on Wednesday - his only ride of the day.
Phoenix Park’s victory was also the first Melbourne (metropolitan) winner for multiple Group 1-winning trainer trainer Grahame Begg since he relocated to Victoria a year ago.
Mott and Begg have combined 17 times this season, for eight wins.
“It’s a fantastic result and good to do it at a city meeting on a Wednesday,” Mott told Racing.com.
“It’s a really good achievement. I’ve got a good manager and a good team at home. I work hard and am always happy to get results.
“My wife and Grahame and Sue Begg have become really good friends. It’s fantastic to get his first win down here.”
A four-year-old daughter of Thorn Park, Phoenix Park ($31) touched off the well-fancied Diapason ($4), while Whirlpool ($9) was third.
