William Pike will make a hit and run raid on Singapore this weekend, the star Western Australian hoop set to partner the Laurie Laxon-trained Lim’s Samurai in Sunday’s Group 1 Patron’s Bowl (1600m) at Kranji.
Pike admitted he was surprised when connections of the Japanese-bred gelding contacted him for the ride.
Speaking on RSN 927's Racing Pulse on Thursday, Pike said: “I’m very lucky and very humbled with the fact that they threw my name in the hat and drew my name out, sort of thing. It wasn’t a phone call I was expecting; I’m over here (in Perth) doing my best, going through the motions. To get a phone call like that, and for people to think that highly of you, it’s nice.”
Lim’s Samurai has had nine starts, for four wins and three minor placings. The four-year-old hasn’t raced since being touched off by White Hunter in a 1400m Benchmark 83 race on May 19.
“I’ve only watched replays of him so far; I haven’t actually spoken to Mr Laxon,” Pike said. “I’m a little bit in the dark still.
