The Sydney carnival may be coming to an end but jockey Blake Shinn still has a few good horses that he's looking forward to riding.
At the top of that list is the John Thompson trained mare Nieta, the winner of five of her ten starts and a warm favourite for the 1000m Ranvet Handicap at Randwick on Saturday.
Shinn and Nieta combined for an easy Canterbury win in August 2016 but after a heavy track defeat over 1400m at Warwick Farm he and the mare parted company; now that they have been reunited it will take a crowbar to get him off her back.
"She's a quality mare and she's certainly got a good race or two in her," Shinn said.
"Compared to last preparation she seems a lot more mature, her two trials have been excellent and she's just cruised in them. I think John (Thompson) is keen to keep her to sprint distances and she should be ready to take the next step this campaign."
Shinn has been riding in excellent form through the month of April.
He kicked off the month with a double at Randwick on Australian Derby Day including a G3 win aboard Acatour, then took a Listed race with Generalissimo, and snagged a treble at Warwick Farm. Throw in a few group race placings including a second in the G1 Doncaster and it's been a very good month indeed.
