In close to two decades in the saddle, I rode over 800 winners including six G1s and 50 Group or Listed winners – so I reckon I’m well-qualified to critique jockeys.
That’s exactly what I’m going to do every Monday, in this column. I’ll nominate the best rides from the weekend – the jockeys that were ‘On Taggart’, and the ride that I think missed the mark, which we'll call ‘Off Taggart’.
Beau Mertens – Leodoro – 1st
Caulfield – Race 8
(No.8, barrier 11)
I've got to hand it to Beau in doing the right thing after last start on this horse and owning up to his mistake, admittedly they got the tactics wrong but he got on the front foot straight away and put the issue to bed. Lesson there is own up to your mistakes which are easy to do. On Saturday he got it right and went back and got around them, simple tactic and that is all this one needed. He got the basics right and kept him out of trouble and trusted that he had the right horse to win from there.
Jamie Kah – Balf's Choice – 1st
Morphettville – Race 8
