CLARE

  • Rail Position: True
  • Track Conditions: GOOD 3
  • Track Comments: Clare is a lovely little track that has a good even surface. They only race here a few times a year and it plays fairly as a rule. Horses can make ground on this track.

This is a very weak maiden and on that basis I am happy to tip No. 1 ASTEROID CLUSTER. This bloke will lead for in-form apprentice Zac Spain and he has been going well enough to win a race like this. His run at Murray Bridge on January 26 was very sound when he led and finished a close fourth to Ransom Value. Spain should be able to use his 1.5kg claim and lead for home and be hard to beat. Don’t be put off by his defeat on Kangaroo Island last start. He ran well there and this race is not stronger. No.7 Skillz That Killz has a good chance from gate 1. She should get a sweet run in transit and has been going well enough to win one of these maidens. Her last start third to That’s A Slab at Balaklava was honest over a mile and she is sure to beat most of this lot home. The only other hope is No. 5 Fletchingly from the astute Stephen Theodore yard. He has shown some form in maidens at home in Victoria and has good senior rider Jake Toeroek on board. He only got beaten 1.5L in a 2060m maiden at Cranbourne on January 15 clearly that is a much tougher arena that Clare.

No. 2 SATURDAY MAGIC is perfectly placed in this race first-up. She should lob in a great spot just behind the lead from barrier 4 for Zac Spain and be very hard to beat. Her most recent trial effort at Gawler on February 22 was sound and Andrew Dillon has a good record when he takes his horses to the bush. Her maiden win at Gawler on September 27 was fair, she did defeat Infinity Queen on that occasion and she can gallop. This is a weak race and given that fact No. 1 Alphabetic is clear second pick. She is well travelled having been to the NT last winter and she did win a very poor BM 60 two starts back at Strathalbyn. From gate 1 she will do no work in the run and she should be able to finish her race off well. No. 4 Pollywagon ran a decent fourth first-up at Gawler in a better race than this behind Babitzen. She’s has the good draw in 3 and with top rider Todd Pannell aboard she has to run a decent race.

Top Four
2 Saturday Magic, 1 Alphabetic, 4 Pollywagon, 3 The Hard Way

This is a bad race in which No. 7 DIVINE WEAVER gets her chance to win another race from the good gate in 2.  She ran a solid third last start in a stronger race than this at Gawler behind Moosem and Rooboy. If she can reproduce that effort she will be very hard to hold out. No. 13 Limbo Queen is not the worst horse and her last run at Balaklava on February 28 over a mile was sound enough when she ran on well to finish fourth 2.5L from Nutherbottlegonski. No. 2 Frank The Ripper ran two good seconds over the Kangaroo Island carnival and from the wide gate he will go forward and give a great sight. No. 3 Hereford will race very handy to the speed if not lead, his last start fourth to Showviz being beaten 2L at Strathalbyn on February 24 was a decent effort and the camp have a good record when they come to these country meetings.
