Back Soviet Secret to win.
No. 1 POWER TRIP beat Flying Artie here on debut in the Maribyrnong Plate back in the spring. He ran on well from the back to be fourth in the Blue Diamond, finishing just behind Zamzam. No. 3 Detective has run second to three star youngsters in Sydney and you have to be impressed by the Snowdens targetting this race down here. No. 2 Jackson was first-up from a spell when third to Weatherly down the straight 1100m here on February 20 when the outside was clearly quicker. He was the first home on the inside. No. 4 Revolving Door and No. 5 Seaburge both looked good, running the quinella over 1300m, Hillside, February 24. There won't be much between these 2YOs in a highly competitive event.
Box 1,2,3,4,5 in the trifecta and first four.
No. 5 BLACK VANQUISH burst on to the scene last autumn with two exceptional wins, the first of those down the straight 1200m here. He has been gelded since his disastrous spring campaign. He looked smooth in a soft trial at Cranbourne on February 22, without the winkers that go back on for his return run. No. 1 Bassett probably kicked for hime a bit soon when first-up over 1200m at Caulfield when a close third to Santa Ana Lane and the smart No. 2 Brockhoff. Bassett is unbeaten at 1100m but he is not that big and the weight might be an issue. No. 4 Stellar Collision is a Weir runner, unbeaten in three runs. He returned with a sweeping win at Moonee Valley. This is tougher but he has to be respected.
Stake Black Vanquish one the win by three the place.
No. 5 THE UNITED STATES began carefully, then took about 150m to get himself going in the 1400m Futurity Stakes at Caulfield on February 27. To get within two lengths of the winner Turn Me Loose was an excellent performance. He has the blinkers on for the first time. Darren Weir's two runners, No. 2 Stratum Star and No. 1 Trust In A Gust both also ran well in the Futurity and are both yet to miss a place at this distance. No. 10 He Or She was second-up when he ran 10th to Bow Creek in the Peter Young Stakes. He was only four lengths from the winner and did run a solid fifth in the Group 1 Emirates here last spring.
Stake The United States one by three. Quinella 5 with 2,10,1 for varying units.
No. 4 CATCH A FIRE is flying and followed a crushing maiden win with a convincing victory over No. 5 Mossin' Around and No. 1 Pasadena Girl in the Angus Armanasco Stakes over this distance at Caulfield. Pasadena Girl and No. 2 Don't Doubt Mamma are the best served at the set weights but both have drawn poorly. No. 12 Egypt ran second to Don't Doubt Mama here in the Vanity, then ran into a deadend in the straight in the Angus Armanasco. She is one of the main chances again.
Stake Catch A Fire one by three.
Bet against No. 1 CHAUTAUQUA at your own peril. His win in the Lightning was amazing and clearly he will be better suited at the 1200m. His power bursts at the end of sprint races are irresistible. Stablemates, No. 6 Japonisme and No. 2 Delectation both ran in the Lightning and both are straight 1200 m winners (Delectation, beating Chautauqua). No. 8 The Quarterback ran on strongly in the Oakleigh Plate, will be suited by the small field and could be the best roughie.
Anchor Chautauqua in your main quaddie.
Hopefully No. 6 BOW CREEK will be loaded last into his outside gate, the button will be pressed straight away and he won't miss the start as he usually does. His win in the Peter Young was outstanding. He really does have explosive acceleration. No. 2 Preferment ran on well for fourth to Winx in the Chipping Norton. He comes to his peak quickly and his Turnbull win here last spring was dominant. No. 8 Awesome Rock did a lot of the bullocking work in the Peter Young and held on well for fourth. Like a few of these, he will be close to peak fitness. No. 5 Our Ivanhowe did not have the best of runs in the Peter Young and will be strong at the end of the 2000m.
Back Bow Creek to win.
If you can overlook her disappointing spring, No. 1 NOBLE PROTECTOR is clearly the one to beat. She won this race last year by a space and has had a similar lead in with trials this campaign. No. 2 Miss Rose De Lago is her obvious threat. She is a high quality, consistent mare who ran very well first up over 1400m behind Azkadellia and Tuscan Sling in the Mannerism. No. 11 Felicienne will be fitter for his closing seventh in that race. She will be much better suited this track and distance. No. 10 Anaphora is very fit and racing keenly. She will be competitive again.
If the money comes for Noble Protector, back her.
There are quite few chances in this even race. Two of No. 9 SWEET AS BRO's four wins have been when second up. He and No. 8 Yesterday's Songs both ran well behind We've Got This down the straight 1200m here on February 20. Both are much better off at 1400m around a turn and both drawn to get easy runs early. No. 7 Petrology has been gelded since his under-achieving latest preparation. He has a stack of ability and could easily blow these away. No. 6 Jessy Belle has blinkers on for the first time and gets down to the minimum weight.
