Race 1, No. 0
MOONEE Valley kicks off on Friday night with the G1X.com.au Plate and we're determined to get you off to a good start. Mick Sharkie has gone through the form for our own race and provided a detailed runner-by-runner assessment.
2 b c Sebring x Barangaroo (Fastnet Rock)
T: Peter Moody, J: Glen Boss
Barrier: 1, Ladbrokes odds $5
On debut. First foal of Moonee Valley-winning mare. He’s had two jump outs at Caulfield to prepare for this and has won them both, even when his jockey’s saddle slipped in a Nov 24 heat - I’m sure the jock in question enjoyed that 700m! Things went to plan at Caulfield on Dec 1 when he settled behind the leaders before rounding them up after a little encouragement. Definitely in the game if Boss can hold the rails on a night when it should pay to be on the speed.
2 b c Sebring x Private (Encosta De Lago)
T: Peter Moody, J: Daniel Stackhouse
Barrier: 9, Ladbrokes odds $7.50
On debut. Has shown a little talent in two jump outs this prep, settling midfield on both occasions before working home well enough under a little pressure to finish around the placegetters in each heat. He seems to lack a pronounced turn of foot and may need more ground than the 1000m of this race.
3 HIGHLAND BEAT
2 b c Exceed And Excel x Highland Daughter (Kyllachy)
T: David Hayes & Tom Dabernig, J: Damian Lane
Barrier: 5, Ladbrokes odds $4
This fellow had trialled well at Flemington prior to his debut at Caulfield in the Listed Debutant Stakes when a drifter from $8.50 to $12. He began well and travelled like he had something to offer when checked badly 300m out and was eased from that point but kept running on under minimal pressure, which is always a good sign. No trials or jump outs leading into this but is talented. Can win.
2 b c Snitzel x Simply Spiteful (Speightstown)
T: Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes, J: Dwayne Dunn
Barrier: 3, Ladbrokes odds $3.50 FAV
Well fancied here on debut when $5-$6-$5 and began well but couldn’t cross the speed inside with Dunn forced to ease to midfield. He looked pretty new to it all, racing tight between runners and had to wait for a run by the 200m. Once the gap came, he quickened nicely. Winkers are applied and from an inside gate he should be right there on speed from the outset. The one to beat.
2 b g Statue Of Liberty x Miss Chard (Al Samer)
T: Tony McEvoy, J: Luke Currie
Barrier: 4, Ladbrokes odds $8
Any debutant from this yard must be respected when they kick off in town, but I wonder whether this fellow is quite fast enough to mix it with a couple of these at 1000m. Never in the hunt in his first trial at Morphettville, then the blinkers went on and he went straight to the front to win a 1000m heat at Gawler. His time was the slowest of the seven heats on the day and he might need 1400m+.
2 ch f Sepoy x Paprika (General Nediym)
T: Brent Stanley, J: Ben Melham
Barrier: 7, Ladbrokes odds $5
Neat little filly that flew the gates on debut here in the same race that Legerity comes through and led the field at a solid tempo. She gave a good kick around the turn but peaked with 100m to run and was worn down by a pretty useful colt. She’ll have to work early to cross and lead tonight and that gives Legerity the chance to turn the tables.
7 LAYNE'S STAR
2 b f Love Conquers All x Hi de Hyper (High Yield)
T: Pat Cannon, J: Chris Symons
Barrier: 8, Ladbrokes odds $14
On debut from a canny stable that has a great record of placing their horses to advantage. On pedigree you’d give her a wide berth, her dam was unplaced in four runs and her only raced progeny has continued that trend (three starts unplaced), but this filly did finish off okay in a Cranbourne trial on Nov 23.
2 ch f Jet Spur x Monicablinco (Falvelon)
T: Dean Binaisse, J: Stephen Baster
Barrier: 2, Ladbrokes odds $51
Comes through the same race on Nov 28 as Girouz and Legerity and she showed good speed to boot right up with the leaders early there. That was where the hope ended for her backers though and she weakened from the 250m and finished a meek seventh.
